Shielded rooms
Rooms with electromagnetic shielding have a sealed metal envelope that works according to the principle of a Faraday cage. They are needed for medical examinations like MRI and for other purposes. The shielding prevents the penetration or escape of radiation. In this way, it firstly guarantees sharp MRI images and secondly ensures that electrical devices outside the rooms (e.g. pacemakers) are not disturbed by the MRI magnetic field. We cooperate with our subsidiary EM Shields to build eavesdropping secure rooms based on the Faraday principle for business enterprises, governments and defence institutions.

Absorber chambers
Absorber chambers are shielded and panelled additionally with absorbers on the inside. This creates controlled test and analysis conditions without interfering reflections – e.g. for the testing of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Manufacturers of electronic devices and components use absorber chambers to provide that their products are not disturbed by common radio frequencies and that their own radiation does not cause interference for other devices. So-called microwave chambers are special absorber chambers that are shielded for high-frequency radiation up to 96 GHz. Their uses include functional testing for antennae, wireless devices, mobile communications devices or radar technology.

Our subsidiary Emerson & Cuming Anechoic Chambers (E&C) is the world's leading manufacturer of polyurethane absorbers for the absorption of electromagnetic radiation in the radio frequency band. E&C has over 50 years of experience in the development and manufacture of electromagnetically effective absorbers. E&C has been a 100% subsidiary of Albatross Projects GmbH since 2010. This close partnership ensures our supply of polyurethane absorbers in excellent, reliable quality.

History

1930

First shielded chamber for medical applications by Siemens & Halske AG, a predecessor of Albatross Projects. The chamber was built from wood and equipped with copper foil for shielding

1931

Shielding of the electrical system in the Graf Zeppelin airship.

1938

Development of radio frequency connectors for shielding purposes.

1951

Development and construction of power line filters for EMC testing purposes.

1955

Sales of full metal shielding for the radio frequency band (RF). First series of modular RF cabins for a frequency range of up to 35 GHz.

1963

Europe's first shielded absorber chamber, built in Regensburg with proprietary absorber technology by Siemens.

1964

High-voltage test laboratory with up to 750 kV and a size of 46x31x27.5 m.

 

1981

Solid metal, non-magnetic shielding for the first magnetic resonance imaging equipment (MRI) by the Siemens medical division.

1982

Establishment of the business unit Shielded Rooms at Siemens AG

1989

Establishment of Siemens Matsushita Components GmbH, a joint venture between Siemens and Matsushita.

1990

Introduction of pan-type module shielding for up to 40 GHz.

1992

Europe's largest EMC test centre for Fiat in Italy.

1993

First EMC hall with 10-metre test rig that exceeds the new ±4dB NSA directive.

1999

Management buyout of the Siemens-Matsushita EMC division and foundation of Albatross Projects GmbH.

2001

World's largest automotive test centre for Hyundai Motors in Korea.
First intraoperative MRI room, also known as the Brain Suite.

2007

First fully glazed door for MRI rooms.

2008

First 10-metre absorber hall with an sVSWR test volume of 5 metres in diameter. Redesign of the 10-metre absorber hall at the Bundeswehr Technical Center WTD 81 in Greding with an sVSWR test volume of 9 metres in diameter.

2011

Europe's first intraoperative MRI room with a 1.5 Tesla magnetic field, built in Tübingen, Germany.

2017

The world's tallest multi-purpose hall. LxWxH 40x25x36.1 metres.
